About the Equine Rescue & Adoption Foundation (ERAF)
Founded in 2000, the Equine Rescue and Adoption Foundation (ERAF) is a non-profit organization committed to the welfare of equines. Based in Palm City, Florida, ERAF’s mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome abused, neglected, abandoned, and slaughter-bound horses, donkeys, and mules.
ERAF primarily serves the Treasure Coast area, including Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee counties, but its reach extends throughout Florida. The foundation cares for an average of 25-30 equines at any given time, with the cost of care for each animal ranging from $600 to $800 per month. Since its inception, ERAF has successfully rescued and cared for over 500 equines, providing them with a second chance at life.
A Commitment to Excellence in Animal Welfare
ERAF upholds the highest standards of care, a commitment recognized by several prestigious organizations. The foundation is accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), and the EQUUS Foundation, which recognizes ERAF as a Mentor organization.
These accreditations signify that ERAF meets rigorous standards for animal care, governance, and operational transparency. For example, the TAA accredits organizations that retrain, rehome, and retire Thoroughbreds, ensuring they receive proper care after their racing careers. Similarly, GFAS provides global recognition to sanctuaries that meet its high standards of excellence.
ERAF also partners with the ASPCA’s Right Horse initiative and is a member of the United Horse Coalition, collaborating with law enforcement and animal control to ensure the safety and well-being of equines. Furthermore, its Gold rating from Candid/GuideStar reflects a deep commitment to financial transparency and accountability.
