Hero’s Home Run Charity Fundraiser: Swing for a Cause
This Sunday, Double Roads Tavern is stepping up to the plate for a truly worthy cause. We are proud to host the Hero’s Home Run Charity Fundraiser, an event dedicated to supporting Army Sergeant First Class Aaron Cornelius.
It’s going to be a day of community, gratitude, and giving back to someone who gave so much for our country. If you are looking for a way to make a difference this weekend, join us as we help Aaron build a safer, more independent future.
A Legacy of Service
Service runs deep in the Cornelius family. Inspired to carry on a proud legacy of military involvement, Aaron enlisted in the Army at just nineteen years old. His commitment to protecting others led him overseas, where he served with distinction.
On April 10, 2008, during his third combat deployment, Aaron’s life changed forever. Serving as a Platoon Sergeant with Alpha Company, 4-64th Armor, 3rd Infantry Division in Al Rashid, Iraq, he was severely injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) blast.
The explosion caused extensive damage from shrapnel to his face and head, resulting in the loss of his sight. After being airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany, for critical surgeries to address an aneurysm and skull damage, Aaron was transported to Walter Reed Medical Center. There, he spent months in a blind rehabilitation center, relearning the practical mobility skills needed to navigate a world he could no longer see.
Why Aaron Needs Our Help
Today, Aaron lives in Florida. He is a proud father of five adult daughters and loves spending time with his grandchildren. He has also found a second calling in music, finding it therapeutic and working locally as a disc jockey.
However, his current living situation presents daily challenges. Living in a non-adapted house with a traditional floor plan means Aaron faces significant safety issues. Narrow hallways and tight corners make navigating from room to room difficult, and he often bumps into walls, turning his own sanctuary into a hazard.
This is where Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) comes in—and where you can help.
Building a Safer Future
The goal of the Hero’s Home Run Charity Fundraiser is to support the construction of a specially adapted custom home for Aaron. This new home will feature:
- An open floor plan to reduce obstacles.
- Wider halls and doorways for easier navigation.
- Automatic door openers to increase accessibility
These modifications are about more than just convenience; they are about safety and dignity. This new environment will allow Aaron to be more independent and, most importantly, secure.
“Security is one of the biggest things I’m looking forward to in my HFOT home,” says Aaron. “No one should feel unsafe in their own home.”
Join Us at Double Roads Tavern
Aaron has chosen to build his home in Florida to stay close to his family. By attending the fundraiser this Sunday, you are directly contributing to the bricks and mortar that will give this hero the peace of mind he deserves.
Aaron extends his deepest gratitude to everyone involved. “Thank you for showing care and compassion for the individuals who have served our country—every donation counts.”
Come out to Double Roads Tavern this Sunday. Let’s hit a home run for Aaron.
